Fabric of Home | Amy Pitt on the South Lawn, Oldway Mansion, Paignton

Fabric of Home | Amy Pitt

unday, June 9, 2019  10 am to 6 pm

South Lawn, Oldway Mansion, Torquay Rd, Paignton TQ3 2TY

Join a multitude of machine and hand-sewing makers to create a map of what home means to us.

On 8th and 9th June, working alongside artist Amy Pitt, we are creating a miniature handmade landscape of Torbay and beyond if the journey takes us there … The landscape will continue to grow up from the lawns at Oldway Mansion mapping our homes, roots, dreams, memories and everyday life.

From March to May, Amy Pitt and textiles artists from across Torbay have been working with local sewing groups to create the foundations of this map that explores what home means to us, what we sew and make at home.

On 8th and 9th June, come along to Fabric of Home and join the make. The map will be growing from 10am – 6pm on each day. Not a maker? Bring a picnic and join us for a day as the work unfolds.

There will be different elements of the landscape to get involved in, depending on how long you want to be involved for and different levels of experience.

·      Construction of 3-dimensional elements

·      Quilting the ‘sea’ and ‘landscape’ elements

·      Detailed work with embroidery and hand-sewing including simple 2-dimensional elements

There will be a whole range of sewing machines to try out from through the ages – treadle machines, cabinets, hand-crank machines, electric machines old and new. You can register for a slot below, or just sign up to use machines on the day.

You are welcome to book for more than 1 sewing slot – over the past few months, some have taken 1-2 hours to add to Fabric of Home, whereas others have dedicated several days!

We are inspired by Singer and the invention of the domestic sewing machine. Built in 1873, Oldway Mansion was the home of the Singer Family. Isaac Singer designed the first sewing machine produced en masse for leisure and domestic use, opening up new opportunities for ordinary households to make their own clothes, designs and products.

Suitable for all ages. Under 16s must be accompanied with an adult on the day. For children, with supervision, hand-crank machines are especially suitable and great fun to learn on.
